Science

Years P-6 Science

Science is introduced to students from an early age at the Maryborough Education Centre. We aim to provide students with an insight into biological, physical and chemical science by enhancing the students’ curiosity and focusing on a ‘big question’. Students learn and practise scientific skills such as questioning and predicting what is going to happen, planning and conducting an experiment, recording and processing, and analysing and evaluating.

A key feature of our science program is the MEC Science Fair. Students are provided with the opportunity to showcase their science experiment and parents are invited to observe their hard work.

We are very fortunate to have a science lab in the 7-12 area of the school and students are often invited to visit by the secondary students to experience and learn about a range of scientific tools, materials and procedures, while being involved in a range of educational activities.

Specialist Science

Science in the Specialist Setting has an inquiry-based approach.  Students learn the areas of Biological, Chemical and Physical Science through a mainly hands-on investigative approach. Science as human endeavour is taught as part of integrated studies as is wonders of Space science –  a favourite amongst students.

Years 7-12 Science

Science has progressively become an all-important priority for governments around the world, because there is an emphasis on training people that can employ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to help countries develop and be competitive into the future.

Students in Year 7-12 have the opportunity to learn:

  • Core Science
  • Forensic Science
  • “How Things Work” Science
  • Pre-VCE Science
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Psychology
